The Holocaust and WWII

Page history last edited by Mrs. T. 13 years, 2 months ago

One of the most horrific--and also one of the most important--events in world history is World War II and the Holocaust. It was a time of great sadness, despair, discrimination, and death. It was a time in world history when people were considered criminals and were even put to death for the "crime" of being "different." It was a time when many turned a blind eye; they feared speaking up for what was right, lest they be discriminated against, too.

Yet, it was also a time when those with great courage rose to the challenge to defeat the evil society that Adolf Hitler created. It was a time when very brave individuals put their lives in jeopardy to do what was morally right. It was a time when regular, everyday people like you and me became heroes.

As we study this unit on the Holocaust, we will read a dramatized version of Anne Frank's diary, as well as other pieces of literature which focus on this time period. You will be witness to the unimaginable atrocities that took place during this time. While we study, there are some very important questions to keep in mind:

Why is it important to study The Holocaust?

What can we learn by witnessing the atrocities that were initiated by only one person?

How did one person manage to affect an entire nation so drastically?

What difference can I make?

Lesson One:

First, it is important to get some background. View the following films. You will meet a survivor who narrowly escaped death many times. You will also learn what it was like to live in Europe at the time of WWII.

The Holocaust: In memory of millions

Saving Private Ryan: Movie critics, film buffs, and history experts claim that the battle scenes in this feature film are the most realistic ever filmed. Although it is fictional, it is as historically and pictorially accurate. It's realism is the reason it has become a classic and was awarded several Oscars.

Saving Private Ryan/Longest Day: Again, a very realistic interpretation and view of what our brave men did in order to save the world from Nazi takeover. Although this is a hollywood production, it depicts war in the most realistic manner possible.

DDay presentation:  These are the REAL heroes. It is important to realize that these people are REAL, not actors. These are the men, some very young men who had hardly reached the age of 18, who put their lives on the line for our country. Many did not return.

What was World War II all about, anyway?
